On Tuesday, deadly attacks by a 21-year-old white man in the Atlanta, Georgia area killed eight people – seven of the victims were women, and six of them were Asians, according to multiple sources. Cherokee County Sheriff Frank Reynolds informed that the suspect claimed he had a “sexual addiction” and “may have frequented” some of the massage parlors, and deny that the attacks were racially motivated. However, Nancy Wang Yuen, who is an American sociologist, said on her Twitter that “addiction and fetishism can absolutely be racial. Identities overlap. Asian American women can experience sexualized racism”.
Based on multiple reports, the shootings show an increase in attacks of Asian Americans nationwide. A study by California State University’s Center for the Study of Hate & Extremism discovered that in 2020, there was a 149% increase in anti-Asian hate crimes in 16 of the largest United States cities – the first spike in crimes happened when the coronavirus was beginning to speedily spread in March and April.
